Perth is one of the world’s most isolated cities, a place glorified for its sun, sea and surf. But is also has many cultural attractions, a growing small bar scene and some of the best late-night eateries in Australia. (Yes, we said it… move aside Melbourne, there’s a new kind of the block). Whether you’re staying for a night or longer, here’s a few things not to miss during your visit to Perth.
Views and brews in Fremantle
Fremantle is a hub for the arts, with many street performers and festivals, and a lively bar and café scene. Stay for a coffee or visit the Little Creatures Brewery for a guided tour by a certified Hophead.
From Fremantle it’s a short ferry-hop to Rottnest Island, a car-free island that is home to the quokka, a cute and friendly marsupial that will be happy to smile for a selfie with you.
Daytrip to Rottnest Island
Just 19 km off the coast of Perth City, but an entire world away, lies the sunny holiday island of Rottnest, blessed with a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery, dazzling marine life and some of the world’s finest beaches and pristine bays. Join one of the many free guided walking tours of the Island or follow your own path along the Wadjemup Bidi. Or hire snorkel gear and discover the stunning beaches and marine life of the island.
Tip: Don’t be afraid of the locals, these friendly quokkas love a selfie or two with tourists.
Views of Perth City Centre from Swan River
This ever-growing city is most beautiful at sundown so be sure to take a stroll along the Swan River and admire the city lights. The blue expanse of the river dotted with splashes of colour from the sails of the yachts make this a truly special view. Wander along before heading into the city centre for dinner.
Dinner in the CBD
From contemporary fine dining to cosy suburban pasta bars, the restaurant scene in Perth CBD will have you dining under the roofs of establishments run by some of Australia’s finest chefs and executive teams. Take a seat at Neil Perry’s Rockpool Bar & Grill or dine with Chef Kiren Mainwaring at Co-op Dining. Fancy a taste of the Middle East? Visit Kurt Sampson’s Propeller or enjoy a taste of Italy at Joel Valvasori-Pereza’s Lulu La Delizia. There’s something for every like so we promise you won’t go hungry!
Dive bars
Drink where the locals drink. From intimate laneway haunts to underground dive bars and upper-class rooftop establishments with city views, there’s a watering hole on every corner in Perth. If you can appreciate quality spirits, craft beer, fine wines and mixologists that know their sh*t, be sure to explore Perth’s extensive bar scene.
